Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has called on the people of Ghana to ignore the claim of the Democratic National Congress to win the 2020 general elections that have just ended.

According to NDC flag bearer Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, John Mahama’s claim is unfounded and totally false.

Speaking at a press conference organized by the government to reject certain statements made by John Dramani Mahama and some senior NDC officials, Mr. Oppong Nkrumah stated that, taking into account data from the Election Commission and the media, the NDC’s claim to retain the majority of seats in parliament is simply false and should be ignored.

Presidential candidate John Mahama had previously stated that his party, the NDC, had accumulated 140 seats in parliament, automatically making them a majority in parliament.

But in reaction to this, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said that it was wrong for a party to declare the results before the Election Commission.

“Candidate Mahama’s claim that his party obtained a parliamentary majority is false. That claim is false. Anyone who has followed the electoral process in Ghana knows that there are tellers in all 275 constituencies. That is different from the teller for the presidential elections. These tellers collate the results and make a formal statement of who has won the constituency.

“Ghana’s media is scattered throughout the 275 constituencies and their collection centers. You are the ones reporting on this election. If indeed, if someone has won 140 seats in parliament, they will already know. “

He added that “Mr. Mahama’s claim that his party has won the parliamentary majority is false. You, the media, are watching the 275 collection centers across the country and I am sure you can confirm yourself at this point that they do not have a parliamentary majority.

“Therefore, it is important that at this time this claim is rejected so that the Ghanaian public, some of whom are going to sleep tonight, the international listening community, does not begin to have the idea that the party of the Mr. Mahama has won a parliamentary majority. “

He also pleaded with Ghanaians to treat such claims with contempt and patiently await the EC’s verdict.

“I think the figures that the Electoral Commission is compiling and declaring are quite clear. The last I saw the media was about 227 constituencies and the details were there on who won what. So please don’t be fooled by any candidate, especially candidate Mahama, ”he urged.
