The standard bearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has stated that he will accept the results of the recent elections only after an independent forensic investigation has been carried out to confirm the veracity of the results.
Speaking in an interview with Voice of America (VOA), Mr. Mahama described the recently concluded elections as “the most incompetent elections that we (Ghanaians) have had.
“Everything in this election falls short of the level that the Ghana Electoral Commission has achieved on its own. The Electoral Commission of Ghana is considered one of the best electoral commissions.
“Unfortunately, in this election, she (Jean Mensa) cannot even get the correct results; the statement is everywhere, “he lamented.
The former president has rejected the results of the December 7 presidential elections, calling them flawed and fictitious. According to the NDC, the EC was in cahoots with the incumbent to rig the elections and steal the victory from the NDC.
“I think [with] the incompetence shown by the EC, it will be useful for us to carry out a forensic audit of the EC’s own systems and the figures to arrive at the final number of the EC, because until now I don’t know what number we are going to gazette ”.
Mahama believes that he takes responsibility as a Democrat and as the choice of the more than 6 million Ghanaians who voted for him to defend (Ghana’s) democracy and demand higher standards from the EC.
“The way they have conducted these elections is a dent in our democratic credentials as a government. And so in my early days as a Democrat, you can’t see me sweep it under the rug and let it go. I think we should close this by looking at exactly where the problems are.
“If the EC conducts an independent audit to show that I have lost, I would be the first to give in and walk away. But as long as that is not done, and I know there was a deliberate attempt to subvert the will of the people in favor of the incumbent, it would be a mistake for me, in terms of our democratic principles, to just leave it, ”he emphasized.
On Wednesday, December 9, the EC declared the current president, Nana Akufo-Addo, of the New Patriotic Party (PNP), the winner of the 2020 elections, with 6,730,413 votes, which represents 51.59% of the total valid votes cast.
It was announced that John Mahama had obtained 6,214,889 votes, which assured him 47.36% of the total valid votes cast.
Despite this, the Democratic National Congress has insisted that it has pink leaves in its possession to back up its claims of having won the 2020 election.
Meanwhile, Mahama is expected to be in Techiman, the capital of the eastern Bono region, on Wednesday, according to a statement issued by the NDC in the eastern Bono region.
