The Youth Employment Agency (YEA) has exorcised 20,000 ghost names from its payroll over the past three years.
An audit by the YEA further revealed that the presence of the ghost names costs the taxpayer GHS82.5 million annually.
The YEA is mandated by law to coordinate, facilitate, and monitor youth employment and related matters in the country.
This was made known by the Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, in the inaugural updates on nation-building in Accra on Wednesday.
Praising the agency’s act, Mr. Nkrumah said: “Youth Employment Program, one of the most important things they have done is just doing due diligence saved us from GHS82. 5 million a year for the last three and a half years. Despite all the numbers that were claimed to be in the Youth Employment Program, by doing an audit, around 20,000 ghosts have been exorcised from that list and the numbers are 82 million GHS a year. “
He added that “now they have also refocused their operations to become facilitators for other agencies, they are supporting other initiatives, including what the president of the Ghana Football Association described as a game changer. About 1000 young people who are paid monthly stipends for being footballers “
In 2017, an internal audit conducted by the YEA exposed a massive financial embezzlement believed to have cost the country $ 50 million worth of GH.
The amount was believed to be a sum of unearned wages paid to unregistered beneficiaries, funds for official use that were entered into personal accounts, and acquisitions without adherence to due process.
