Trade and Industry Designated Minister Alan Kyerematen on Friday described the Akufo-Addo government’s flagship One District, One Factory (1D1F) program as “a revolutionary invention that has been introduced to the country since independence.”

He said 139,331 jobs were created, with a total of 232 1D1F projects in various stages of the program.

One hundred sixty-eight (168) of the 232 were new factories added to the existing ones.

“So if you look at the statistics, only 64 of the 232 companies (already) existed. 168 of them are new companies ”, said the Designated Minister.

The Designated Minister spoke about the flagship program, which has been under the supervision of the Ministry of the sector since 2017, when he was questioned about the status of the program during his investigation by the Parliament Appointments Committee on Friday in Accra.

The Committee derives its power from the 1992 Constitution of Ghana and the Rules of Parliament, to examine and recommend to the plenary of Parliament to approve or reject those nominated by the President for public office such as Minister of State, Chief Justice or any other. another charge. specified by the 1992 Constitution.

The Designated Minister revealed that 76 of the projects were currently in operation, while 107 of the projects were under construction.

“Forty-nine (49) projects are ready to begin construction within the first half of the year.”

The 1D1F is a policy of the Government of Ghana, which aims to create jobs for Ghanaians through the creation of factories and industries, which in turn will lead the country towards industrialization.

The policy was first presented to Ghanaians in 2016 as part of the New Patriotic Party manifesto, and its implementation began in 2017.

Mr Kyeremateng said: “Through the intervention of 1D1F, so far 139,331 direct and indirect jobs have been created in the 76 companies that are already operating. 285,915 additional direct and indirect jobs are projected from the projects that are under construction ”, he added.

According to the Designated Minister, the 1D1F program is critical in bringing industry and development to the doorstep of ordinary people and that is why the Government of Ghana is aggressively pursuing it.

Kyerematen, who held the same ministerial portfolio in the first term of the government headed by Akufo-Addo, said the Ministry had launched a comprehensive intervention to reduce the import of important commodities like sugar, rice and poultry, as the nation spent about $ 1 billion importing these products into the country.

“We are close to a billion dollars in imports on average for no reason because we have the local capacity to be able to do import substitution to produce these commodities, but this supports the decision of the President of Ghana to launch a comprehensive program for the transformation industry, which my ministry has been leading and basically this transformation program is anchored in two parallel tracks ”, said the Designated Minister.

There are also interventions to strengthen the capacity of local companies so that they can substitute imports and produce for export.

On what was being done to support the nascent factories, the Designated Minister, lawyer, businessman, diplomat and management consultant, said that the government had mobilized GH ¢ 2.3 billion from local financial institutions and also provided payment of an interest subsidy of GH ¢ 230 million.
