Ashaiman MP Ernest Henry Norgbey has said the Election Commission claims to have restored 14,000 of the 21,000 missing names that allegedly disappeared from the voter registry in his constituency.
He told reporters on Saturday, September 19, 2020: “As of yesterday when the book was opened, some 21,000 names, including my own, could not be found in the new voter registry in the Ashaiman constituency.
“It is not weird?” He asked himself.
“You don’t need to be told that this is an Election Commission agenda to disenfranchise many people, especially those within areas perceived as strongholds of the NDC,” he alleged.
According to him, “We registered 167,254 at the close of the registry, but yesterday [Friday, 18 September 2020]According to our controls in the registry, it was 146,310 ”.
“This means,” he said, “that if the anomaly is not rectified, the people whose names are not on the roll will not be able to vote in the next elections and only God knows what will happen to us if this evil is allowed. succeed ”.
The opposition legislator, however, announced that after meeting with the EC on the issue, two thirds of the missing names have reappeared.
“Let me quickly tell you that upon realizing the anomaly and raising the alarm, the Electoral Commission, after meeting with them this morning, claimed to have suddenly restored the names of some 14,000 people on the roll,” he said.
“This, we have yet to confirm,” he said.
He said: “The Electoral Commission is saying that they have brought a new registry and that in this new registry, we have around 160,000, which means that they have reinstated 14,000 people and we have yet to confirm to know if it is true.” .
“In fact, they challenged my number when I raised the concerns, but in less than 24 hours they managed to restore some 14,000 names, including mine.
“Where did you get the names of the 14,000 people?” I ask.
“We are still missing about 7,000 people who should be restored.
“We are looking for the EC to restore the gap of 7,000 names still missing from the registry, or else face the wrath of the Ashaiman people,” he warned.
EC Director of Public Affairs Sylvia Annor previously refuted the MP’s claims, insisting that her name was on the record and that 21,000 names had not disappeared.
