Black Stars midfielder Thomas Partey is set to complete a sensational move to Arsenal, the English Premier League giant, on the transfer deadline day.
If the deal goes through as expected, Partey will follow in the footsteps of Ghanaian greats like Tony Yeboah, Asamoah Gyan and Michael Essien, who have excelled in the Premier League in the past.
But how much do we know about the 27-year-old who played 35 times in the league for Atlético de Madrid last season and is being touted as one of the best midfielders in the world right now?
GHANAsoccernet, has gathered ten facts about the Black Stars deputy captain as he approaches the emirates:
He was born in Odumase Krobo (Ghana) on June 13, 1993 and grew up playing for a team in his hometown.
He is the oldest of eight children in his family.
His father runs and coaches a team at Odumase Krobo, where Thomas began playing until he was nine years old.
While playing for that team, his father gave him the nickname “Senegal” because he reminded him of a friend with the same name.
After playing for his father’s team, Thomas developed as a footballer on one side of the neighborhood while waiting for new opportunities.
The opportunity to take a big step forward came when Tema Youth, a Division Two team from Ghana, saw it. With them, he experienced a play-off for promotion to the top flight of Ghana.
His performances were noticed by scouts and enthusiastic reports of his abilities spread across the country. Thomas has said an agent showed interest in him in 2011, even though he wasn’t playing yet.
His agent quickly saw his potential and decided to take him to Spain, where he was given a test with the Atlético de Madrid youth academy. The rojiblanco coaching staff did not hesitate to sign him.
In four months he made the leap from Sub 18 to Sub 19, and a season later he was already in the second team ‘Colchonero’. He was loaned out to RCD Mallorca and Almería before Diego Simeone gave him a chance in the first team.
After playing for RCD Mallorca, he trained with the Ghana Under-20s, but did not make it to the 2013 Under-20 World Cup in Turkey.
