Georgia, Georgia Tech game may not be dead in 2020

When the ACC was first reported to be moving to a conference-only schedule, that eliminated a couple of non-conference games for Georgia, whether the SEC followed or not. But the 2020 edition of Clean-Old Fashioned Hate may not be dead yet.

According to Gary Stokan, the CEO of Peach Bowl Inc., which operates the annual launch games, there may be an opportunity to play the rivalry games within the state.

“What we have suggested is that if they play conference games plus one game, because we know that the ACC and the SEC like to play their rivalry games, if they went in that direction, then we would provide them with an alternative,” Stokan said Wednesday.

That means UGA vs. UVA would be off, but the Cavaliers may have a chance to face West Virginia in some form of that game according to Stokan.

The last time the Georgia game, Georgia Tech did not happen was in 1924 due to the First World War. For almost 100 years, the game took place in late November or early December with the Bulldogs dominating, especially in recent times. UGA leads the all-time series 68-41-5 and has won 16 of the last 19 and 23 of the last 29.

Power Five programs may have a chance to play a game outside of the conference and preserve some inter-conference and interstate clashes, but according to Stokan, there is almost no chance that the schools in that conference will play with the smaller schools.

“I don’t think the conferences agree to play in the Group of 5 schools, because I don’t think the tests are comparable,” Stokan said. “I think one of the reasons they are watching only lectures, from what I am reading about Big Ten and Pac 12, is because lectures control testing and what is done in Power 5 schools, where lectures have more money and can pay for the tests, it may not be the same as elsewhere. “
