Washington Washington – Former President George W. Bush Bush, the only surviving Republican former president, congratulated President-elect Joe Biden and Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris on Sunday while urging Americans to come together in the wake of the bruised political campaign.
In a statement, Mr. Bush revealed that he spoke with Mr. Biden and Mr. Harris on the phone and said he prayed for the president-elect for his success and pledged his allegiance to the way I could. The former president also marked the historic election of Harris, as he will be the first woman vice president and the first black vice president.
“Despite our political differences, I know Biden as a good man who has won the opportunity to lead and unify our country,” Bush said.
The two-term president, who rarely got involved in partisan politics after stepping down in 2009, also congratulated President Trump and his supporters, calling the more than 100 million votes he received an “extraordinary political achievement.”
Aiming at the large number of voters in the general election, Mr. Bush said that voting is a positive sign of the health of our democracy and a reminder to the world of its strength.
“It doesn’t matter if you vote or not,” he said. “President Trump has the right to request a recurrence and to face legal challenges, and any unresolved issues will be properly judged. The American people can be confident that this election was fundamentally right, its integrity will be upheld and the outcome is clear.”
Mr. Bush said the nation faces difficult challenges that will demand “President-elect Biden and Vice-President-elect Harris – and the best of us” and urged the American people to unite.
“We must come together for our families and our neighbors and for our nation and its future,” he said. “There is no problem that will not achieve the collective will of the free people.”
Bush urged the nation to “join us in wishing our next president and vice president as well as they will be prepared to carry out their important duties.”
