PC gamers in territories that traditionally pay less for digital games have seen the pre-order price of Horizon Zero Dawn it skyrocketed after players allegedly used VPN to secure the game for far less than the price listed in their own regional stores.
in a ResetEra In the thread describing how the practice hurts people in regions with less money, members detailed how the price has skyrocketed in several countries, including Argentina, Mexico, Russia, Brazil, and China.
“I know there is a thread about HZD turning steam, but it’s more about regional prices and how people in rich countries can ruin the poor count.[r]ies by taking advantage of it, “wrote a poster on ResetEra (thanks, VG24 / 7)
“So when Steam opened pre-orders on HZD, the price of the game in Argentina was 539 pesos (about $ 7). Overnight, that price went up 2,100 pesos. This is due to the number of people buying the game. Using a VPN to get a cheap game, Sony decided to raise the price.
“For all those who don’t know, here in Argentina we have high inflation figures every year,” the message continued. “Due to customs, buying hardware here (consoles, PC parts, etc.) can cost 2-3 times more than in the US. Gaming is an expensive hobby and even more so here. The only good thing we had in the last two years it is having some PC stores with competent regional prices, but if people from other countries keep abusing this, we won’t even have that.
“In the end, I just wanted to blow off some steam and raise awareness that if you’re in a first-world country and you abuse regional prices to make games cheap, you’re actively hu[r]Ting people who probably have a lot less income than you. “
A similar thread in Reddit Claims prices have risen from 5 percent in Canada to 289 percent in Argentina, and Turkey, Russia, South Africa, Colombia and Brazil have seen at least a doubling of the original price, if not more.
Others, however, argue that it is “it is not so easy” buying games through VPN and suggesting that the game might be priced incorrectly in the first place.
“I am Argentine and I bought the game yesterday. But it was pretty obvious that there was a mistake with the price.” countered another poster. “It was VERY cheap for an AAA game at launch. The price it has now makes more sense. I don’t think anyone would have complained if it was at that price from the start.”
