Gallery: Travel photographer Stin Mann compares the iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 12 Pro Max camera

After his in-depth review of the iPhone 12 Pro camera last month, travel photographer Stin Mann is back today with a look at the new iPhone 12 Pro Max. Apple Play has made big claims about the iPhone 12 Pro Max camera system, and the Honor Review gives more details on what you can expect.

Apple Pal says the iPhone 12 Pro Max has a larger sensor, longer telephoto lens and new sensor-shift stabilization technology. The biggest improvement with the iPhone 12 Pro, Mann says, is when using a wider lens in semi-low-light scenes.

This led me to the most significant improvement I got when shooting wide (26mm) and handheld in semi-low-light scenes. Consider a candle-lit dinner, after sunset, or an urban scene of a night with some available light.

In many of these cases, I have found that the iPhone 12 Pro requires only 1 second as opposed to the iPhone 12 Pro Max which requires 2 seconds in night mode. This means less time for camera shake and subject movement.

Mann also touched on the new 5x optical zoom range with the iPhone 12 Pro Max, which is above the 4x zoom range on the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro.

As photographers, this wide range gives us more freedom to view and capture scenes differently. When displaying ultra-wide context, more compressed 2.5x telephoto can illuminate certain details remotely.

After all, Mann says, the iPhone 12 Pro Max only offers “significant improvements in very specific scenes” compared to the iPhone 12 Pro. The question is whether these improvements are worth the larger 6.7-inch form factor of the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

I really enjoyed using the extra focal length of the telephoto and pushing the Max into low light, but it feels huge in my hand and hard to work with as a single-handed camera, so I’m still debating which iPhone is right for which. Me.

I know that the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max both have big jumps in imaging capabilities compared to previous years, so regardless of your decision between this year’s models, I know you’re going to enjoy shooting with this new iPhone. My camera
