Four Costco stores in the Bay Area report a total of 31 cases

The Santa Clara County Department of Public Health is investigating a group of coronavirus outbreaks at four Costco stores.

The county confirmed that the Gilroy location reported six cases between July 24-30, the Mountain View store four cases July 15-29, the San Jose store on Senter Road, eight cases between 17 and on July 22 and the Sunnyvale store 13 cases between July 23 and 26.

All four stores remain open.

The initial investigation revealed that “Costco is complying with social distancing and other protocols and that many of the cases have been caused by community transmission and probably not by internal transmission among employees,” according to a county statement.

The county said officials are working with Costco to identify people who had close contact with infected employees and ensure that disinfection measures and testing protocols are followed.

None of the other stores in the county have reported outbreaks, authorities said.

Regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, Costco says on its website: “We are closely monitoring the changing situation and complying with Public Health guidance.”

Costco requires that all employees, members, and guests wear face covers in their stores.

Costco was not immediately available to comment on this story.
