Florida Governor Ron DeSantis reiterates that Walt Disney World is safe to reopen

At a press conference this afternoon, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis praised the procedures and precautions being taken by central Florida theme parks that have reopened, such as Universal Orlando Resort, or are about to reopen. As Walt Disney World will do so tomorrow at the start of its cast member previews.

When asked about the safety of the theme parks reopening, DeSantis emphasized the measures implemented at the theme parks:

The theme parks have been very good. I mean, Universal … if you look at what they’re doing … and that’s, I think, the lesson: We have to make society work. You can make society work in a way that keeps people safe. And when you have all the different procedures in place, people will do it, it’s a safe environment. Disney, I have no doubt that it will be a safe environment. I think when you start to see the spread it’s only in social situations where people let their guard down. Usually like a private party or something. That is something we have seen. But I think people who value security show you that, you know, we can handle this, make society work, you still want people to go to work … but do it in a way that requires basic precautions. I’m really impressed. with what Universal did, and I’ve looked at Disney’s plan and it’s very, very thorough.

When asked at what point in time he would consider closing theme parks again, he reiterated the need to focus on high-risk groups and that for the general population, “Doing the basics will help.”
