A student athlete from Penn State tested positive for the coronavirus.

WPSU first reported the news on Thursday morning after the Pennsylvania Department of Health reported a positive result in the ZIP code for the school’s University Park campus on Wednesday.

“Wednesday’s positive report for ZIP code 16802 is the first positive report involving an Intercollegiate Athletics student-athlete,” a Penn State Athletics statement said. “The health and safety of our student athletes, coaches, staff, and the community at large are of utmost importance.

“Therefore, as part of the protocols established in the back-to-campus plan by Penn State Athletics medical staff and in consultation with local and national University officials and guidelines, individuals with a positive result have been isolated for 14 days and will be retested at that point. In addition to isolation, contact locating procedures have been implemented, including quarantine and testing for those who may have been exposed, even if they are asymptomatic. “

The student athlete was not identified.

Penn State last reported the results of the tests between students and athletes last Wednesday, when it revealed that it evaluated 178 students and athletes as of July 10 without positive results. The school publishes the test results every two weeks, and its next update will take place next Wednesday, July 29.

The school’s vice president for intercollegiate athletics, Sandy Barbour, said during a press conference earlier this month that the school is evaluating all student athletes upon their return to campus and then only reevaluates those with symptoms. Players from various teams have returned to campus since June to participate in NCAA-approved volunteer trainings.

“In the future, all ICA test results, including positives, will only be reported every two weeks,” the Penn State Athletics statement said.
