Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge), also known as FitzSimmons, finally got their happy ending together.
For most of the series, the couple found themselves constantly literally separated by space and time – so often that Fitz was convinced that the cosmos simply did not allow them to be together.
But fans of Fitz and Simmons always knew they were engaging, and the finale gave the characters a satisfying, well-deserved ending.
Fitz was noticeably absent for most of last season, as De Caestecker filmed another project at the time of the “AoS” recording. With the actor’s limited schedule, Fitz’s absence was written into the plot.
In the final, viewers learned where he was.
Earlier, the Chronicoms got hold of Fitz and Simmons and gained access to their memories with a machine. Because the couple devised a way to defeat the Chronicoms and save the team, they could not risk their plan being discovered by the Chronicoms.
That Fitz disappeared to an unknown location for his protection, while Simmons stayed behind and had an implant placed in her body that suppressed her memories and therefore hid Fitz’s location and plan.
In the final, the pair were reunited, though it took Simmons a while to recall their memories and remember who Fitz was. Fitz explained that he was in the original timeline the entire time he was missing.
He said that when the team went back in time, they diverted themselves from the original chain of events and created an alternate timeline. But by entering the quantum, as he did after going subatomically, the agents would be able to jump between the two timelines and defeat the Chronicoms.
Through a series of flashbacks, fans saw that FitzSimmons lived a happy life together during the years they spent on a world-saving solution.
This is also when Fitz built the Coulson LMD, which was made specifically for this definitive mission so that they could all work together.
Fitz always knew her plan would work, so he and Simmons slowed down by fixing everything so they enjoyed their time together. They even had a daughter named Alya.
While she was virtually gathering with the rest of the agents after the one-year leap, it was revealed that Fitz was retired from SHIELD and enjoyed fathers.
Meanwhile, Simmons was also no longer with SHIELD, but he quietly helped Daisy with an anatomical analysis.
