Final Fantasy XIThe producer announced yesterday that the game is getting a new story.line, in an incredibly charming little August update letter for gamers.

As Square Enix continues to maintain its first MMORPG through regular patches, Final Fantasy XI hasn’t received any new story content since 2015 Rhapsodies of Vana’diel to update, that more or less tied all the existing narrative threads in the game. Now Akihiko Matsui, the producer of the game and an old man Square Enix veteran says another chapter will be added to that story.

“The most exciting news I have to share is that a new story is coming to Vana’diel!” he wrote in the game’s August update letter. “This story, which will unfold over the course of many version updates rather than just a few, explores a side of Vana’diel that has never seen the light before.”

Players will have to play and finish the Rhapsodies of Vana’diel However, to access it, so if you, like me, are intrigued by the promise of an overdue MMORPG whose world was built for nearly two decades, it’s time to get down to business.

I’d be lying if I said that the prospect of loading dozens of hours of a 2002 game didn’t seem daunting to me, but Matsui’s update letter really inspired me a bit. I mean, it’s so wonderfully personal and healthy. Here he is talking about the weather:

“On an unrelated note, it occurs to me that most of my greetings begin by talking about the weather or other seasonal issues, which I am sure seems somewhat banal to you. For those of you who live outside of Japan, I have often asked you to imagine the weather in a place you would never have stepped on before; Now I would like them to do the opposite and tell me what summer is like where you are from. Some places have wet, sticky summers, and others have hot, dry summers. I find that learning about the world is an incredibly rewarding topic, so let me know what summer is like where you’re from. ”

This is how all service game updates should end in the book. I’m serious when I say I could dive head first Final Fantasy XI for patch notes only.
