Fauci says virtual classrooms are better in parts of the country hit hard by COVID-19

(Reuters) – Disruption with virtual classrooms would be better in parts of the country that have a positivity rate of coronavirus infection of more than 10%, said Dr. Anthony Fauci, the best American expert on infectious diseases, on Tuesday.

Fauci said the standard position should be to try and reopen schools for the psychological health of children, but added that a unilateral approach to schools could not be taken again.

“On the one hand, giving a statement and taking over the country as a whole will not work – we are so heterogeneous with the infections,” Fauci said in a virtual conference hosted by the Healthline Health Information website .

Some American schools are almost as closed as they welcome students as the nation tries to reopen, while the level of new cases per day remains high in many states.

The US has more than 5 million cases of confirmed coronavirus infections, the highest in the world, according to a Reuters census.
