“We are excited about the popularity of Dr. Fauci’s Topps NOW card,” Emily Klass, Topps communications manager, told USA Today. “Topps is proud to capture the unique moments of the MLB season, one baseball card at a time, and the inclusion of Dr. Fauci in this year’s Topps NOW cards is just one way we highlight the uniqueness of the 2020 season. “
The card featured Fauci’s first pitch on the opening night of Major League Baseball in Washington on July 23.
Fauci, 79, a key member of the White House coronavirus task force and the government’s top infectious disease expert, was honored to launch the first pitch for the league’s abbreviated season.
The shot did not hit the plate and it was not thrown in a straight line.
A New York Times report later revealed that Fauci had practiced from a distance of 40 feet in a local high school field instead of the required 60 feet and 6 inches that mark the distance from the rubber to the plate.
“I fully calculated the distance from the mound,” he said.
The previous record was 19,396 cards sold for a card by Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
The Fauci card sells for $ 9.99.
