Fatshark Announces Grimdark Warhammer 40,000: Darktide Cooperative Game

They are gone and they have, team. Warhammer: Vermintide 2 developers Fatshark went and put their rat buster in space, announcing Warhammer 40,000: Darktide at today’s Xbox Game Showcase. Frankly, it was time for someone to make a rock solid FPS in the 41st Millennium, and who better than the people who turned an old and heavy fantasy war game into a stellar successor to Left 4 Dead?

Fatshark revealed Darktide with a short cinematic earlier today. Get your 40K bingo cards, readers – we have unnecessarily stoic Britons, poorly lit hallways, and a lot of existential fear.

Darktide appears to be closely following the Vermintide format, offering four-player cooperative play through the dirtiest and wettest holes in a shadowy world, avoiding hordes of rats zombies, mutant cultists and demons. So far, we’ve only seen a group of faceless Imperial guards, but Ratpunch’s true strength was its characters, as mechanically varied as they were delightfully bitter.

The gloomy future has some weirdos, so I silently hope Darktide can really get by on that front. Vermintide’s very good hand-to-hand combat is said to be returning as a focus as well, so I hope the Chainsaw Battle Nuns and Drill Tentacle Mechanicus Servers are thrown alongside your Guard. Please?

Yes, there are way too many 40K games out there, but I don’t think anyone has had a proper FPS crack in that world since the incredibly irritating 2003 Fire Warrior. But then, I’m proudly logged in thinking that Vermintide blew Left 4 Dead. 2, the zombie favorite, and I think Fatshark can bring those cooperative games to the hive.

Warhammer: 40,000: Darktide will launch on Steam next year.
