Universal Studios Japan will open its new Super Nintendo World attraction on February 4.

That date was announced this morning along with the first official photos from inside the area, including Mario Kart and Bowser’s Castle-themed games.

A date in early February feels like an ambitious target for the attraction, which has stalled since the summer as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

The original plan was for Super Nintendo World to open in conjunction with the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Japan’s Olympic minister recently said that the rescheduled Tokyo Olympics should be held in 2021 “at any cost.”

But just last week, Pokémon Go was forced to scrap an outdoor event to be held in Kyoto at the last minute. Japan’s Mainichi newspaper blamed the cancellation on a new surge in coronavirus in the country, which saw Tokyo hit a “one-day high of more than 500 cases.”

Today, the Japanese media took a tour of the area – here are images from Bloomberg, also confirming that the next Nintendo area is under construction next door, this time with the Donkey Kong theme.
