The launch of Sony’s PlayStation 5 is just a few days away, and people are excited about the next-gen experiences it brings. But one of the most important features of the console is supposed to be backward compatibility, but for PSVR players, it may not be as good as it sounds.
Sony has said that its new console would play 99.9% of PS4 games, including nearly every virtual reality title on the platform. The PlayStation VR headset is compatible with the PS5 console, but it recently came to light that the PS5 camera is not compatible with the PSVR headset. Sony offers a free dongle that converts PS4 camera to USB to work on PS5.
Result; The dongle requirement may have been a sign of the level of support the PSVR would get on the PS5. A spokesperson for Sony told UploadVR that the PS5 versions of No Mans Sky and Hitman 3 would not include virtual reality support, adding that the company “has not announced PS5 titles for PS VR.” Sony regards the PSVR as a “backward compatible device”, not as a PS5 accessory.
This reveal comes just a day after Jim Ryan, the CEO of PlayStation, said the washington post virtual reality would not be a major focus of attention for the company for years to come. “Virtual reality will represent a significant component of interactive entertainment,” Ryan said. “Will it be this year? No. Will it be next year? No. But will it come at some point? We think yes, it will.”
Those statements don’t sound like strong endorsement of the current state of PlayStation VR or the immediate future of the platform. Hopefully we’ll continue to see new PSVR titles, but it doesn’t sound very good for years to come.
