Netflix has released the trailer for the fourth season of the royal drama The Crown, which focuses on the tensions between Queen Elizabeth and Margaret Thatcher. The new season begins in the late 1970s and continues through the 1980s. Thatcher, played by Gillian Anderson, will be seen leading the country into the Falklands War.
“My goal is to change this country from dependent to self-sufficient, and I think I am succeeding,” Thatcher said in the trailer.
“You could say that they are two very similar women, born only a few months apart. They are very defined by WWII, by a sense of frugality, hard work, commitment, Christianity and much more. She held wisdom with which Queen and Thatcher didn’t get along. I think there was probably a lot of respect, “executive producer Peter Morgan said in a statement, according to Variety.
“But they also had a lot of differences, it was a lot of fun exploring their differences and their similarities. I also get the chance to explore them both as mothers. Writing to Thatcher and the Queen as mothers was probably an angle that no one has explored before. It produced one of my own. Favorite episodes of the season, “the statement read.
The royal family is also concerned about the line of succession this season and therefore needs to find a ‘suitable’ bride for Prince Charles (Josh O’Connor). Although Charles has a crush on Camilla Parker Bowles (Emerald Fennell), his romance with Lady Diana Spencer (Emma Corrin) becomes a ‘much-needed fairy tale’ to bring the British people together. The season will magnify Diana’s propulsion from teenager to public figure, and her desperation to feel part of the family.
