2K Games has detailed the improvements that are being made in the next version of the next generation basketball simulator, NBA 2K21.

The next generation version of NBA 2K21 will feature technical and gameplay improvements, taking advantage of improved hardware on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. They include changes to dribbling movement, defense and off-the-ball maneuvers, foot planting and a new feature that relies heavily on Measure of the New DualSense controllers for PS5.

The game’s dribbling mechanism has been “rebuilt from scratch for the next generation,” according to NBA 2K game director Mike Wang, who says “the difference is night and day” compared to the current generation version. “We retain the concept of distinctive dribbling styles […], but otherwise, everything was scrapped and redesigned, “he added.

The result is an increase in realism, responsiveness and consistency, allowing players to better predict movement and more accurately reflect their intentions when moving with the ball in hand. “It’s a complete package and I don’t think I can overstate how much it has elevated my enjoyment of playing the game,” said Wang.

No-dribble movements, defense on the ball and off-the-ball actions have also been improved. The development team has improved the routes, cuts and stops, improving the landing feeling of the defender.

Movement stability and response have also been modified, reducing the character’s nerves. Additionally, taps on the left stick will now allow players to take quick steps when they want to make subtle adjustments to their defense.

The game’s foot planting mechanic also has adjustments. 2K Games has redesigned the foot planting technology, which will now allow players to “perform procedural steps instead of sliding their feet when they need to micro-adjust.”

Wang also revealed that the PS5 version of the game will include a unique feature called Trigger Effect. Use the adaptive triggers and haptic feedback of the PS5 DualSense controller to enhance the gaming experience. The adaptive triggers of the controller will transmit energy and fatigue to the player. Players will feel an increase in trigger resistance when trying to make an exhausted player run across the court.

“It’s so fun to feel the difference in your hands between a low shot and a hard shot,” added Wang. “It’s also a great reinforcement tool for understanding when you make players work too hard on the court, which could affect their levels of energy / stamina and potentially cause wear and tear on their bodies with our in-depth injury system. “

2K Games and Wang also detailed a bunch of other changes coming to the next-gen version of NBA 2K21, including its impact motor, bodies and contact without ball. Take a look at the full post on the NBA 2K21 website.
