It took Apple four years to unveil a successor to the first-generation iPhone SE, but the next version could come sooner.
A cheep by Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants who sheds light on Apple’s smartphone plans beyond the iPhone 12 claims that Cupertino plans to launch the third-generation iPhone SE in spring 2022.
According to a graph Young shared that gets information from investment firm Mizuho Securities, the next iPhone SE will employ a 6.1-inch LCD screen and dual cameras. However, it will lack Face ID and opt for a fingerprint sensor.
Additionally, this entry-level device will only support 5G below 6GHz, skipping the faster 5G millimeter wave technology that appears to be unique to Pro-series iPhones for the foreseeable future.
If many of those specs sound familiar, maybe they should. The iPhone SE 2022 looks a lot like the soon-to-be-discontinued iPhone 11, which also has a 6.1-inch LCD screen and a pair of 12-megapixel wide and ultra-wide lenses on the back.
Like DSCC, Mizuho Securities also says that there is no new iPhone SE model in 2021, we have to wait until 2022. According to Young’s tweet, the next iPhone SE will in fact reuse the cameras from the iPhone 11, adding legitimacy to the theory that Apple will bring the iPhone 11 back as a SE model after a year of absence, just as it did with the first. and second-generation iPhone SE which were based on the iPhone 5S and iPhone 8, respectively.
The rest of Young’s tweet reveals a swath of information about the iPhone 13 series, which we have explored in greater detail in another article. The iPhone 13 series will reportedly once again consist of four devices, just like the iPhone 12 lineup, and the pricier Pro variants will get 120Hz ProMotion displays once and for all. This was a long-rumored feature. time that Apple would introduce with the iPhone 12 Pro, although the bottom line on that issue is that the company has decided to ditch the faster refresh rate panels.
All in all, the next iPhone SE sounds like a logical step forward, and perhaps the final death sentence for the classic big-bezel home button iPhones of yesteryear. A 6.1-inch iPhone SE seems a bit too big for a number of devices that have typically played its compact form factor as a significant part of its charm, but at this rate, who knows how gigantic the average smartphone will be in 2022.
