In BMW’s view, the engine that powers its last two M cars, the M3 and M4, sets a new high point in terms of power and torque for inline six-cylinder petrol units. Specifically, the power unit offers 60 hp more than the maximum power of its predecessor models and an increase in maximum torque by 100 Nm.

The company claims that its 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine combines the high-revving character of BMW M engines with the latest version of its M TwinPower Turbo technology. As a result, 650 Nm of torque is available between 2,700 rpm and 5,500 rpm, with sustained power at 510bhp from these RPM to the 7,200 rpm redline.
