Addis Ababa, September 24, 2020 – Debretsion Gebremichael (PhD), chairman of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), the ruling party of the Tigray regional state, consolidated the presidency of the region after receiving overwhelming support from the newly formed regional parliament.

Debretsion was already serving as vice president of the state of Tigray after being elected to the position by the outgoing council in January 2018. Although he had full responsibility for the regional presidency, he was elected as a ‘deputy’ because he was not a member of parliament. regional.

A key figure in the federal government before the rise of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to the post of Prime Minister, Debretsion was elected president of the TPLF only in November 2017, following intense infighting within the party that led to the removal of the then President Abay Woldu. and the members of the executive committee Azeb Mesfin and Beyene Mekeru. Debretsion was serving as Ethiopia’s Minister of Information and Communication Technology when he was elected President of the TPLF. Prior to that, and appointed by former Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, Debretsion served as Deputy Prime Minister for Finance and Economic Cluster in 2012.

A veteran in the TPLF’s 17-year fight against the military junta, DergDebretsion finished his university studies to join the rebel movement in the early 1970s as a radio communications technician. Subsequently, he obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering from Addis Ababa University (AAU) and went on to receive a doctorate in information technology from Capella University, an online university, in 2011.

Recently, Debretsion is more in the news for his regional government’s resistance against the federal government, culminating in Tigray’s decision to hold a unilateral election for the regional council in which the TPLF won 189 of the 190 seats in the regional parliament. .

Despite repeated warnings from the federal government about the illegitimacy of the elections, Tigray continued to form his new government today, resulting in the election of Debretsion as regional president.
