The couple appeared in The Today Show Thursday to announce Wetumpka, Alabama, as the lucky recipient of a city-wide facelift for their new HGTV show, Acquisition of the hometown.
Wetumpka, a small town north of Montgomery that houses 8,278 people, was chosen by HGTV among 5,000 shipments from cities in the U.S.
“[HGTV] I wanted to choose a town that was going through what all the small towns go through, “said Ben The Today ShowJenna Bush Hager and Willie Geist. “There were young people who left and did not return; the main roads had been diverted to avoid the city.”
The network also wanted to choose a city that would have faced adversity, which Erin says Wetumpka “embodies 100 percent” due to the devastation the community suffered from a tornado in 2019.
“And on top of all that, what really mattered most is that they have a lot of community spirit,” added Erin. “They love their city and they want to revitalize it.”

Like the stars of HGTV HometownErin and Ben transformed the dilapidated old houses in their own hometown of Laurel, Mississippi, into residents’ dream homes. Now, they’re bringing their renovation skills to Wetumpka for another city-wide revitalization project that will also include renovating small businesses and public spaces.
