Epic Games Store is adding another functionality that it lacks compared to competitors like Steam: mod support. The first title to participate in the beta release of Epic Games Store Mods is MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries. An update is available for the game, and players will be able to modify the title through the Epic Games Store Launcher.
Adding mods can add massive appeal to a game and help extend its lifespan. They allow players to change parts of the experience to suit their needs. Traditionally, modifications had to be hacked into a game. But, in 2011, Steam introduced the Steam Workshop, which allows players to manage their mods within the store’s own client and automatically apply them to game files stored locally on their machine. Now Epic finally has a beta version of that same technology.
In a blog post on the game’s official site, the MechWarrior 5 5 The Piranha Games developers recommended a handful of mods that can change the core mechanics, overhaul the systems, expand the enemy AI, and even turn the first and third person action game into a real-time strategy game. In May, Epic Online Services was released, which provides a set of tools like cross play, cross progression, unified matchmaking and more free for developers. Epic Games Store is coming to more quality of life improvements, like the ability to maintain a shopping cart and send gifts.
