The two largest independent makers of the engines that practice video games, Unity Technologies and Epic Games, are stepping up their funding efforts to capitalize on the booming market for interactive entertainment.
Unity and Epic both offer “game engines” – software toolkits used by other developers that can provide keyboard shortcuts when programming a new game and make graphics more realistic. These engines are used by millions of designers to create games, ranging from puzzle apps to first-person shooters, without having to start coding every time.
Once seen as niche technologies for high-end games, investors in Unity and Epic bet that their 3D graphics tools will shape the next generation of entertainment, from video games and new forms of online socialization to Hollywood movies and TV shows.
Last week was Epic Games, better known outside the industry as the maker of Fortnite: Battle Royale, closing a $ 1.8 billion round of financing, the company was valued at $ 17 billion. The deal includes Sony’s $ 250 million investment last month, which the PlayStation maker said would “expand its collaboration” ahead of the PS5’s release later this year, as well as a non-public share in stock sales by employees.
Games made with Epic’s Unreal engine, like Microsoft’s long term Gears of War series, the visual capabilities of game consoles have often shifted with realistic graphics and new lighting effects.
Rival Unity has meanwhile hired bankers for an expected public announcement expected later this year, said one person informed of the matter, a move that would benefit from its enormous growth in mobile apps and fuel expansion to a much larger addressable then mark video games.
Although Unity is seen as more limited in its capabilities than Unreal, it may be easier to use for smaller teams than independent developers. Unity also adds some of the world’s most lucrative mobile games, including Pokémon Go and Activision’s recent Call of Duty Mobile.
Both companies have made inroads in Hollywood. Unity was used by Disney to make the African savannah for last year Lion King remake, while Star Wars TV spin-off The Mandalorian was shot using Unreal Engine graphics.
“Historically there has been a substantial convergence of the industry in the game developer business, but in recent decades the number of developers has increased so much, I believe the market can support two major players,” said Piers Harding-Rolls , games analyst at Ampere Analyze.
A “general jump”
In May, Sony used a demonstration game developed in Unreal Engine 5, the latest iteration of the toolkit, to showcase the advanced capabilities and photorealistic graphics of its upcoming PlayStation 5 console.
Tim Sweeney, founder and CEO of Epic, hailed Unreal Engine 5 as a “generational leap”, with Fortnite even set to be among the first games to use it on the PS5 and Microsoft’s rival Xbox Series X. (Epic denied Mr to get. Sweeney to get for interview.)
“Unreal is a cornerstone in a more end-to-end statement from Epic,” said Mr. Harding-Rolls, who includes his own storefront for selling PC games and a platform for building online multiplayer experiences . ‘This whole suite of tools they built for Fortnite are now offered to third parties. ”
Epic wants to use its new funding to play a key role in the development of the so-called “Metaverse” – an expansion of games to platforms for new types of social and entertainment experiences, where friends will gather to watch virtual concerts. Analysts said Sony’s investment in Epic could signal that the Japanese company will push more of its entertainment claims into Fortnite, whose virtual island has real artists including Travis Scott and Marshmello.
“If Epic achieves its vision for the Metaverse, then the addressable market could grow from the entire global video game community to the entire global Internet-connected population,” said Mina Faltas, chief investor at Washington Harbor Partners, which has invested in Epic.
In a sign of the confidence that this vision has inspired among investors, the backers of Epic have agreed to buy common stock, instead of preferring shares with larger rights that are typical of venture financing.
“Your own means of production”
At present, however, Unity has the upper hand, with many more developer clients thanks to its popularity as a platform for mobile gaming and greater use.
The company has won the support of venture firm Sequoia Capital and private equity group Silver Lake, whose co-chief executive Egon Durban is a board member at the gaming company. Investors recently valued Unity, which declined to comment on this article, at $ 6 billion in a round of funding last year.
Traditionally, most of the value in the gaming industry has been added to intellectual property owners – including franchises Call of Duty of Super Mario—Read the underlying tool. In Fortnite, which was released in 2017, has made Epic a cultural phenomenon and an enormous new source of cash flow. But like Unity, the longer term of fortune depends on providing tools behind the scenes to swaths of other developers.
A major hurdle for both companies is that some of the major game makers choose to use their own engines instead of licensing independent products. The two largest US-based gaming companies, Activision Blizzard and Electronic Arts, use their own proprietary software, which allows for greater differentiation and control.
“If you want to adapt an original to your game, there are disadvantages to using an engine and possessions from a brand that everyone uses,” Mr. Harding-Rolls said.
One executive at a gaming company with its own engine, who asked not to be named to discuss commercially sensitive matters, said it was important to “own your own means of production.”
“We’ve optimized it to do certain things incredibly well,” he said. “Having your own engine gives you an advantage of first mover.”
Costs are also a concern: Epic charges a five percent royalty for the sale of each game developed with Unreal, once the title’s gross life income exceeds $ 1 million, while Unity does not charge royalties and instead developers a license fee cost to use their software.
But as both smartphones and consoles become increasingly powerful, more developers are turning to Epic’s sophisticated tools to create more distinctive games, bringing new momentum to the two-decade-old Unreal Engine.
“Unity started out as the amateur platform, making it incredibly easy to make games. . . The speed with which you can get something functioning is phenomenal, “said Nicholas Lovell, a consultant for the gaming industry.” Unreal can only be used by professionals. That’s its strengths and weaknesses. “
