The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were determined to get their hands on parents, meaning they chose against hiring a cousin to help when Prince George was born.
Shortly after her first son was born, the Cambridges moved to Kate’s family home, The Manor, with her parents Michael and Carole Middleton helping her.
But when they moved home and began trying to fit a patient to work out their royal duties and charities, things became difficult.
Kate opened up to the Queen about how difficult it was for her to visit the family at Christmas for Sandringham before Christmas, when the two women had a heart to heart.
Royal expert Katie Nicholl tells True Royaly’s Kate Middleton: Here we go again documentary: “Kate had a conversation with the Queen in which she confided that she had found on her own with George, and not quite a granddaughter like a maternity nurse, very hard .
“William and Kate wanted to be hands on parents, and they did it until September and then they recruited a grandchild.”
Nicholl claims she learned from George and when Charlotte was born, one of the first appointments was a maternity nurse.
Parenting writer Kelly Rose Bradford added: “I think despite their good intentions the first time, Kate and William soon knew
they could not keep their jobs in hand and also provide full-time care for their children. “
Even though Kate did not have the help of staff for the first few months, her parents and siblings were always on hand to help – roles she continues to play today.
Nicholl tells the program: “One of the things that makes William and Kate so ordinary is the presence of the Middletons in their lives.
“Carol is a regular through those golden gates at Kensington Palace, she’s flying through in her Land Rover. There’s no security because everyone knows her.
“She comes up to help with bedtime and bath time.
“She is absolutely indispensable.
She was from the very beginning when William and Kate moved into the Middleton house, The Manor, in the early weeks of George’s life.
“It was to Carole that Kate left when she was so bad, she did not want to face the world, she did not want to be in a palace on her own, while William was studying for his new job, she wanted to be with mother.
“I find that very special. I find it wonderful that she allowed it, that the courtiers did not stand in her way.
“She can go home, not be photographed and actually just be Kate. Taken care of by mom.”
Royal Reporter Simon Vigar adds: “Mummy and daddy Middleton are absolutely crucial to this story, ten years back and all through the courtship.
Carole is very involved in George’s upbringing and is looking after her eldest daughter Kate when she was ill with this extreme morning sickness.
“For many weeks Kate was at home in Berkshire with mother and father and grandmother Middleton took up the tribe.”
