The head of SpaceX and Tesla embarked on his new venture, which involves a brain-computer interface that will have multiple functions.
Neuralink is your new tech company, and it has given us drip information on Twitter in recent days.
Responding to computer scientist Austin Howard, Musk confirmed that the technology he is working on will allow people to ‘listen to music directly from our [Neuralink brain] chips’.
He also stated that Neuralink “could help control hormone levels,” and said that this could be used to our advantage for things including “improved abilities and reasoning and anxiety relief.”
Neuralink was founded in 2016 and only made a major public presentation on how the technology will actually work, with more information expected on August 28.
However, at an event in 2019, Musk said his new firm is working on what he called a sewing machine-like device.
It doesn’t really sound like something I would like in my brain.
But Musk said the device provides a direct connection between a chip that would be inserted into the brain and a computer.
The technology is said to be able to be used initially to help people with brain diseases, including Parkinson’s, but the goal would be to allow humans to compete with advanced artificial intelligence.
Last week, another Twitter user asked more about his capabilities.
Pranay Pathole tweeted, “Can Neuralink be used to retrain the part of the brain that is responsible for causing addiction or depression? It would be great if Neuralink can be used for something like addiction / depression.”
Musk replied, “Sure. This is both cool and terrifying. All we have ever felt or thought of were electrical signals. The early universe was just a soup of quarks and leptons. How did a small part of the universe start? Think about himself as sensitive?
He said having it adjusted would be like undergoing laser eye surgery.
The company must be having a recruiting campaign, because over the weekend it made a request that anyone with a background in wearables consider joining the company.
He tweeted, “If you have solved difficult problems with phones / portable devices (sealing, signal processing, inductive charging, power management, etc.), consider working on [Neuralink]”
Trials of the new technology have already started on animals, and human trials will be done later this year, although exactly when has not been released.
More information will be announced on August 28.
