Foreign Policy magazine said US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo agreed to halt foreign aid to Ethiopia due to the Grand Renaissance dam, while officials said the cuts would not affect US funding for emergency humanitarian aid, food aid or health programs.

It seems that events are occurring in a way that downstream countries do not want. There is something Egypt and Sudan fear about the fate of their water stocks in the Nile, in light of negotiations that are not new to Cairo.

However, the major development came from the United States, hoping to blast a hole in the wall of the Ethiopian Great Dam negotiations.

Foreign Policy magazine said the US Secretary of State approved a plan to stop foreign security, military and educational aid to Ethiopia.

According to the magazine, Addis Ababa could be deprived of some 130 million dollars in US foreign aid, as a step that Washington seeks to end the confrontation between Ethiopia and other countries that oppose the construction of the Renaissance dam.

The latest measure by the United States can inflame tensions in relations between Addis Ababa and Washington, not only that, it may also face internal opposition in Congress.

A US official was optimistic when he saw that there is progress and a viable path in the dam file The official, according to Foreign Policy, confirmed that Washington seeks to help facilitate the achievement of an agreement that achieves a balance between the interests of the three countries.

The US move coincides with a new session of talks, which includes the African Union receiving “a unified draft” of the three countries’ proposals on a final draft agreement on Ethiopia’s Great Renaissance Dam.
