Dr. Sherine Ali Zaki, Director of the Food Safety and Field Monitoring Committee at the General Union of Veterinarians, said that catfish, catfish or CAT FISH are freshwater fish that live only on the bottom and have a name common in the Egyptian colloquial “porpoise”, and this despite It does not live except in fresh water, except that it was called by that name because it feeds on anything from waste and lives in any water (canals or drains).

He added that no matter how dirty the environment around catfish is, like drainage water and swamps, it lives, grazes and grows a lot in it. In its capture, especially because of their large size, due to the strength of the fish and the flexibility of its body.

Catfish Locations:

It is found anywhere, that is, it does not have a specific habitat in Egypt (the Nile River, canals, canal branches, irrigation canals and drains of all kinds), and can be found in abundance in waters that contain wastewater by two reasons:

The first reason: The scarcity of fishing in these waters because they are dirty, which is why catfish are seen in abundance and in large sizes due to the scarcity of fishing.

The second reason: the availability of food (sanitation) since this type of fish can feed on anything and graze in any water.

Zaki warned about catfish living in sewage, and all kinds of expenses. Because their bodies contain high amounts of microbes and bacteria, as well as the possibility that they contain heavy metals like lead or mercury if they live in waters that have industrial wastewater for factories.

Zaki emphasized that catfish do not have a specific habitat in Egypt, and can be found in Nile or drainage waters, defining the difference between catfish that live in drains and their counterpart from other species that live in running water, such as the whiteness.

We first buy from a trusted merchant or a fisherman who sells on the Nile.

– Stay completely away from large catfish, as large catfish eat meat and get it from frogs or rodents, especially if they live in schools.

But catfish are small in size and often feed on plants and therefore we are somewhat certain about their feeding method, which makes one fish good and another that we cannot eat.

– Choose catfish that are light colored, with silver color and pink fins, and stay away from dark ones that are black because they are often catfish that were raised in drains, so the darker their color, the greater the impression of raising them. in sanitary sewers or dirty waters.

The belly of the catfish should be very white and refrain from buying catfish that have a gray or brown belly.

– Clean the fish well and dispense with its guts and head, and cut it into medium pieces and then cook it well in the heart or in the oven, so that we make sure that there are no live parasites in it, and this advice is always given to cook any type of fish to avoid damaging the internal parasite vesicles.
