For the first time, former Swiss club Al-Ahly coach Rene Weiler revealed the reasons for his departure from the team following his leadership to the Egyptian Premier League title for the 42nd time in its history.
Al-Ahly announced the termination of Rene Fyler’s contract and his departure last Thursday, and the appointment of South African Betsu Musimani as his successor.
“Corona has also arrived in Cairo, and I have seen my family exactly once since February, when I came to Switzerland on a private plane in June,” Fyler said in a television interview with “Sport Panorama.”
The Swiss coach indicated that due to the uncertain future, he then had a clause in the contract and decided to turn his back on Egypt for family reasons.
He continued: “The decision to leave was difficult. I wanted to finish the season. We did a good job until qualifying for the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League.”
The 47-year-old added, expressing his sadness: “But some circumstances were also stressful. The club is huge, it’s incredible. I had no private life and I couldn’t eat out.”
He continued: “If I wanted to accompany my family at the airport, I had to dress up so that people would not know me, but they still knew me like that and I had no private life.”
He explained: “The difference in cultures affected my experience with Al-Ahly. This is what happened in the first leg of the African Champions League quarterfinal in Khartoum, Sudan. I don’t want to remember it at all.”
He continued: “My teammates and I feared for our lives, it was a decisive match, we needed a draw, we were winning 1-0, a quarter of an hour before the end.”
He continued: “There was a kick for us and the Al Hilal fans burst into the stadium, and things came out of the stands, you can’t even imagine!”
“After the game, the team had to stay in the locker room for two hours,” he concluded. “We were protected by a huge police force, and they had assault rifles that I hadn’t even seen in war movies.”
