A report by the British newspaper “The Economist” revealed Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s growing desire for his country to possess nuclear weapons, as one of his rights.
The newspaper claimed that despite the abundance of comments on the importance of limiting nuclear weapons, the matter has become more difficult in light of the growing desire of several countries to possess nuclear weapons, including Turkey.
The newspaper pointed to a recent study by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, according to which leaders tend to seem more inclined to own the nuclear bomb, since their control of power could somehow facilitate the implementation of their plans and dreams.
The study noted that Erdogan increasingly began to speak publicly about it, according to Russia Today.
The newspaper stated that the Turkish president discussed with his party members in September 2019 that some countries possess nuclear missiles and that Turkey does not possess similar weapons, saying at the time during the meeting: “This is something that I cannot accept.” .
The study quotes Sinan Ulgen, a former diplomat who heads the Istanbul-based Idam Research Center, who doubts that Erdogan will act on this rhetoric.
He added: “At first, the Turkish public may like the idea of owning nuclear weapons, but the economic cost to Turkey will be very great and long-term.”
