Surveillance video footage showed a minibus escaping from the scene of a girl’s murder in the Maadi suburb of the Egyptian capital, Cairo.

The statement quoted eyewitnesses as saying that Maryam was parked with another girl “from the car in which the (Prosecutor’s Office) found bloody traces near her. The security authorities announced the arrest of the driver and his escort, who “dragged and killed” the girl, and who is under investigation.
Maryam’s murder sparked widespread anger in Egypt and social media users mourned her, especially after media outlets said her death came after she defended herself from harassment.
The Egyptian actress, Rania Youssef, wrote in a series of tweets: “May God have mercy on you, Maria. You are safe in a much better place”, highlighting that the “harassment to which the girl was subjected is worth the death penalty for the perpetrators “.
