The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, called on Saturday for the resumption of negotiations, mediated by the African Union, on Ethiopia’s Great Renaissance Dam, to reach an agreement on the filling of the dam.
In a statement, Borrell said: “It is time to reach an agreement on the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam between Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan,” and expressed support for South Africa’s efforts to mediate the archive of the Renaissance Dam. .
He added that it is time to act and not to increase tensions, saying that the efforts of South Africa and the current president of the African Union to unite the parties to reach a consensual solution with the full support of the European Union, amid the continuing Ethiopian threats to fill the dam.
Negotiations between Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan, mediated by the African Union and sponsored by the United States, the African Union and the European Commission, came to a standstill last August without reaching an agreement on legal and technical points.
The European Commissioner said: “More than 250 million citizens of the Blue Nile Basin will benefit from a predictable agreement based on a negotiated agreement to fill the Great Blue Nile Basin.”
Ethiopia said on Saturday that any kind of threat in the ongoing dispute over the filling and operation of the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is “incorrect, unsuccessful and a clear violation of international law.”
The statement issued by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s office at the Renaissance Dam did not mention any particular person or country.
However, the statement came hours after US President Donald Trump and Sudan’s Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdouk called for a friendly settlement between Egypt and Ethiopia.
In the call to reporters at the White House, Trump said he also informed Egypt of this, adding that the situation is dangerous and may amount to Egypt “blowing up” the dam.
“There are still frequent statements from time to time with hostile threats to subject Ethiopia to unfair conditions … These threats and insults to Ethiopian sovereignty are incorrect and unsuccessful, and a clear violation of international law,” the Ethiopian statement said.
Abe’s office said the first phase of filling the dam was completed in August.
