The European Union decided to lift the sanctions framework that it had imposed on former President Hosni Mubarak, his family and the leaders of his regime, holding them responsible for the misappropriation of public money in Egypt.
The European Union announced in a statement on Friday that it had “lifted the restrictive measures imposed on nine Egyptian personalities.”
The European Council statement clarified that the sanctions it imposed on the symbols of the Mubarak regime were aimed at “helping the Egyptian authorities to recover embezzled state funds.”
The Federation stated that, after the last review of the list of personalities, it decided that this system had achieved its purpose, noting that the restrictive measures taken by the European Union are not sanctions but rather are aimed at “achieving positive change.”
The statement added that the sanctions regime linked to the embezzlement of state funds “served to strengthen the objectives of the partnership between the European Union and Egypt.”
On March 21, 2011, the federation made the decision to freeze the assets of 19 people. The list included former Egyptian President Mubarak, his wife Suzan, their two sons Alaa and Gamal, his two wives, and Egyptian businessman Ahmed Ezz, but only nine names remained on the list until the decision was issued today.
