Books – Mahmoud Ali:
Syrian television announced the death of Walid al-Muallem, Syria’s foreign minister, early Monday, at the age of 79, after a diplomatic career that spanned 56 years.
“Al-Muallem” was born on January 13, 1941 in Damascus, studied economics and political science at the University of Cairo, before joining the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1964, and works as an ambassador to Damascus in Great Britain, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Tanzania and other countries.
Walid al-Moallem is considered the diplomat of difficult tasks under Bashar al-Assad, Syria has always been the country the world is talking about, especially after the wave of the Arab Spring of 2011.
And he was responsible for the thorny external archives during the Bashar al-Assad era, even before assuming the ministerial portfolio, and managed the archive of Syrian-Israeli relations, from 1990 to 1999, which witnessed a major change in the situation. Syrian international record, in addition to the Syrian-Lebanese relations file in 2005. At a time when diplomatic relations between the two countries were at stake.
Al-Moallem used foreign media to paint the image of Bishara al-Assad abroad, despite what the state was suffering at home, and described what is happening in Syria as “international terrorism”, referring to countries that they take a position opposite to the position of “Assad”.
Despite the world’s stance, which appeared to be tough in the wake of the waves of popular protests in Syria, Al-Muallem’s diplomacy has led Moscow, which is Assad’s strongest ally, to the beginning of shuttle trips to the international community to beautify the image of “Bashar”, and that the “opposition” owns the “Assad” part of Damn business in Syria.
During the 11 years of the bloody conflict in Syria, Walid al-Muallem was in a diplomatic war on a front that he called “the legitimacy of the regime to defend itself”, from which he managed to change the position of some countries and the withdrawal of the US position, which attacked him and accused him of “aiding terrorism.”
Al-Muallem delivered his country’s speech at the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly, which is the last of the most prominent international events in which he participated, last September, in which he stated :
_ Political agendas in the world are still ahead of humanitarian agendas.
_ Turkey is “one of the main sponsors of terrorism” in its country and in the region.
The continued presence of US and Turkish forces on Syrian lands is an occupation with all the legal dimensions that this entails, and that Syria will spare no effort to end this occupation.
_ The Syrian government has never stopped getting involved in the political arena, which led to the formation of the Constitutional Committee and the start of its work in Geneva.
Today’s reality does not predict the future we want.
