Sudan voiced its reservation Tuesday on what it described as a continuation of the same approach taken in the Renaissance dam negotiations, calling for a greater role for experts and observers.

According to a statement from the Sudan Ministry of Irrigation, Sudan confirmed during the meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan, which was held virtually, its adherence to the negotiation process as the only means to reach a satisfactory agreement on the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.

The Sudanese Minister of Irrigation, Yasser Abbas, indicated that “there are specific technical and legal issues that are still in dispute, including the binding nature of the agreement to be reached, the mechanism for resolving disputes about the agreement and the relationship of the agreement that can be reached. reach with other agreements on the waters of the Nile “.

Abbas stressed that “reaching a binding and satisfactory tripartite agreement requires the political will of the leaders of the countries involved.” Negotiations between Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia have been suspended since last August, which were carried out under the auspices of the African Union. Those negotiations failed to reach an agreement between the three countries and ended after Ethiopia announced the end of the first phase of filling the dam.
