Sudan decided to boycott the ministerial meeting on the Renaissance dam, which was called for Saturday, according to a statement issued by Sudan’s Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources.
This is “confirming the previous positions of Khartoum in which it requested the participation of African experts as facilitators of the negotiations between the three parties (Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia)”, according to the statement reported by the Sudanese News Agency (SUNA).
According to the statement, the Sudanese Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Yasser Abbas, in a letter to his Ethiopian counterpart Slichi Bikli, highlighted Sudan’s position to give a greater role to the experts of the African Union, in order to facilitate the talks.
He stressed that the method used in the negotiation during the past rounds has been useless.
According to the statement, the message reiterated Sudan’s adherence to the negotiation process under the auspices of the African Union to reach a binding legal agreement satisfactory to the three parties, in accordance with the principle of “African solutions to African problems.”
On Thursday, Egypt reaffirmed the importance of resuming negotiations to reach a binding legal agreement on the filling and operation of the dam as soon as possible, during a hypothetical meeting at the level of the foreign and water ministers of the three countries.
