Homemade masks can be almost as effective as N95 respirators recommended for American medical workers if a certain type of fabric is used in multiple layers.

This conclusion was reached by scientists from the Argonne National Laboratory in the United States, who published their research on the site of the journal ACS Nano.
According to the results of their studies, masks made of two layers of fabric contain different types, for example, the finest masks made of cotton and silk, due to their capacity ranging from 80 to 99 percent to capture and repel particles of aerosol.
One-layer masks showed the worst results, as the smallest liquid particles and solid matter particles that were sprayed in the air came out freely.
Specialists have also evaluated the effectiveness of medical and domestic masks, depending on their suitability for the face. The ability to filter particles decreased almost twice in all types of masks, if there was a very small gap between the skin and the protective mask.
In early April, American scientists discovered ways to reuse masks for doctors. Three common methods for disinfecting protective equipment have been identified: heat treatment, UV treatment, and hydrogen peroxide (HPV).
