The World Health Organization has called on rich countries to stop concluding “bilateral agreements” with pharmaceutical companies regarding vaccines for the emerging corona virus, calling for more solidarity.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the World Health Organization, said that he calls on vaccine manufacturers to prioritize their distribution under the “Kovacs” mechanism established by the organization.

He added: “I urge countries and manufacturers to stop concluding bilateral agreements at the expense of the Kovacs mechanism,” according to Agence France-Presse.

The Global Health Director also asked countries that have requested an excessive number of vaccines to deliver them to the “Kovacs” administration immediately and distribute them fairly starting today.

“Going to buy the vaccine hurts everyone,” he said, expressing regret for the few poor countries that have been able to start receiving vaccines.

Adhanom noted that low-income countries and most middle-income countries have not yet received the vaccine.

“We can solve this problem and we must solve it together thanks to Kovacs,” he added, explaining that no country should fully vaccinate its population while some remain without supplies.

The director of the organization revealed that 42 countries have launched vaccination campaigns, including 36 high-income countries and 6 middle-income countries.

This call comes at a time when the European Union is doubling its pre-orders for the “Pfizer-Biontech” vaccine, amid criticism of the slowdown in the vaccination campaign in Europe.

Earlier, Gebresus called on rich countries not to “run over” the poor in the race for a vaccine against the emerging corona virus.

“Kovacs”, established by the World Health Organization and the Alliance for Vaccines, to distribute anti-virus vaccines to disadvantaged countries, concluded agreements to obtain two billion vaccines and the director of the organization said: “We are ready to distribute them as soon as the vaccines are delivered. “
