Sadiq Al Mahdi dies of Corona infection

For decades, Al-Sadiq Al-Mahdi represented a controversial situation in Sudan and beyond, at the level of thought and politics.

Al-Mahdi, along with his leadership of the Umma Party for more than half a century, elected at the beginning of the millennium as the imam of the Ansar Da’wah entity, one of the largest religious groups in Sudan.

Al-Mahdi spent more than 7 years of his life in prisons, and also in forced exile by successive military regimes, most recently the Al-Bashir regime, which overthrew the Mahdi’s elected authority in 1989.

During years in prison, exile and prosecution, Sadiq al-Mahdi wrote dozens of books in the fields of thought, politics, and history.

Al-Mahdi’s condition had deteriorated in recent hours, after he contracted severe pneumonia as a result of complications from the virus.

Al-Mahdi was born in December 1935 in Omdurman, the largest city in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum. He obtained a master’s degree in economics from the University of Oxford in 1957.

After the death of his father, Siddiq al-Mahdi, in 1961, he assumed the leadership of the Ansar and the leadership of the United National Front. He was elected Prime Minister of Sudan between 1966 and 1967 and between 1986 and 1989.

In 2014, he criticized the Sudanese authorities and was arrested and imprisoned several times in the past, in 1969, 1973, 1983 and 1989.

Al-Mahdi heads the Sudan Call Forces, a coalition that includes civil parties, armed movements, and civil society organizations.

He has several books in the Sudanese library, including “The Future of Islam in Sudan”, “Islam and the New World Order” and “Sudan How Far”.
