Reuters reported that Microsoft announced it was among the targets of a large-scale cyber attack that recently targeted a number of government institutions in the United States.
On Thursday, the agency quoted a Microsoft spokesperson as saying that the company had discovered malicious software on its systems that carried out the attack, explaining that malicious code has been incorporated into widely used “Orion” software for the network management produced by the company “SolarWinds”.

The spokesperson mentioned that the company, like other “SolarWinds” customers, actively searched in light of recent developments for evidence of this malicious actor, emphasizing that the company had discovered, isolated and removed malware from its networks.
The spokesperson emphasized that the giant company did not find any evidence that its systems were used to attack others, but “Reuters” quoted a source familiar with the details of the attack as saying that the hackers used Microsoft’s cloud services to avoid company infrastructure.
Meanwhile, another informed source confirmed to the agency that the US Department of Homeland Security did not believe that “Microsoft” software was the primary means of spreading the infection.
This comes at a time when US authorities are trying to determine the scale of the cyberattack, which is the largest in a decade in the United States, and the media quickly blamed “Hacker Ross.”
According to reports received, the attack affected the Ministries of Finance and Energy and the National Communications and Information Administration (NTIA) of the Ministry of Commerce and the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA).
