Elizabeth II, Queen of Great Britain, jailed American film producer Harvey Weinstein, was officially stripped of his honors after being convicted of sexually assaulting a former production assistant and raping an actress.
The Queen issued instructions to cancel the “Honorary Commander Medal” awarded to Harvey Weinstein on January 29, 2004, according to an official announcement in London.
The conviction of the American movie mogul on rape charges has prompted new calls to strip him of his praise, a move backed by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
Weinstein, 67, was awarded by Queen Elizabeth II, the second highest honor in the kingdom, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the British film industry.
A US court sentenced film producer Harvey Weinstein to 23 years after being convicted of rape and sexual assault.
Weinstein is a film producer and co-founder of the entertainment company Miramax, which has challenged the dominance of the big Hollywood studios into a powerful company to be reckoned with in the film industry.
Weinstein and his brother Bob were behind the production of a number of successful films in the 1990s, and their film, “Shakespeare in Love,” won seven Oscars in 1999, including Best Picture.
