The English daily “Sun” said that French star Paul Pogba, the Manchester United star, had decided to withdraw from international football for the French team, following recent statements by the French president on Islam.
“Sun” indicated that the decision of the French government, with the support of the French president, to honor the teacher who published insulting images of the prophet Muhammad, “may God bless him and grant him peace,” enraged the French Muslim star Pogba, who was very upset with this behavior.
France 24 said in a news story that Pogba, along with Barcelona star Osman Dembélé, had told the French Football Association about representing the French team and had withdrawn from playing internationally.
Pogba played 72 games for the French national team, scored 10 goals and contributed to his country’s victory in the last World Cup, which was held in Russia in 2018.
Islam is the second most popular religion in France and Europe, and there is more than one Muslim player on the French national team, all of whom are of non-French immigrant origin.
French President Macron attended the funeral of the teacher killed for posting insulting cartoons of the Prophet and declared his support for the publication of the images again.
The French president’s decision angered Muslims around the world as there were calls for a boycott of French products.
