Last September, the activities of the 55th session of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes – the world’s largest annual gathering to discuss novelties in diabetes treatments – saw the announcement of a new insulin, which participating physicians described at the time as a new revolution in the world of insulin and diabetes treatments, during the conference activities I attended. Today, almost a year after the conference, the company that produces this new type of insulin announced the approval of the Ministry of Health and Population to register the drug “Solica”, which contains two compounds of drugs for diabetes, namely the basal insulin and its GLP1 counterpart. This type of insulin is a new advance. With the patient, controlling the rates of fasting and mycosis at the same time through a single injection per day (insulin glargine and lixinatide) instead of 4 injections throughout the day. The new drug is delivered using a pre-filled injectable pen with “Solo Star” technology, which is the world’s largest insulin injection technology: according to the company’s statement, the new drug will be launched on the market before the end of this year .

Dr. Hala Ramzy, head of the medical sector in Egypt and Sudan at the producing company, said that they continue their efforts and leadership in developing diabetes treatments and providing new treatment solutions for the patient, noting that Solica is a new solution that can help adults living with irregular type 2 diabetes. Reaching a balance in the level of diabetes and achieving the goal of treatment.

Commenting on the introduction of this new drug in Egypt, Dr. Salah Shalabya, professor of diabetes and endocrinology at Ain Shams University School of Medicine, said that the new treatment “Suliqua” is in fact two types of treatments at the same time. same time, which means it contains insulin glargine with GLP. -1 Lexicenated, this wonderful combination is offered in a subcutaneous injection pen.

He added: “Some type II diabetics benefit from this new treatment, as it gives the doctor and the patient great flexibility in 3 points, which are: First, two different treatments affect once a day and not two injections. Second: It greatly reduces the incidence of diabetes, which is the famous roadblock. Third: Weight gain usually occurs with insulin use, but with this new treatment, there is no ability to gain weight.

The professor of diabetes and endocrinology confirmed that this treatment is prescribed by a doctor specializing in the treatment of diabetes, and for some cases of the second type, he will start treatment with insulin.

Dr. Muhammad Reda Halawa, Head of the Department of Endocrinology and Diabetes at Ain Shams University School of Medicine, said that the new insulin (Suliqua) avoids the patient repeated daily injections and one injection over the course of the day is sufficient. day to regulate blood sugar level.

He continued: “Studies have revealed the possibility of avoiding disease through an ideal lifestyle and exercise, and it is known that a diabetic takes treatment for longevity … Now, according to some recent studies, it is possible to change lifestyle and lose weight between 10% and 15%. It would lead to a return of the level of diabetes to the normal rate, and that 10% of patients can dispense with treatment in a period of time following this appropriate regimen that ranges between 6 and 12 months, according to the study, whose results were impressive and they encouraged a healthy diet and sports regimen.

Commenting on the spread of diabetes in Egypt in recent years, Dr. Salah El-Ghazaly Harb, professor of diabetes and endocrinology at Cairo University, and former chairman of the National Committee for Diabetes Control, confirmed The problem with diabetes is that it has no symptoms, and most cases of the disease are discovered by chance, and that’s where it comes from. The importance of awareness about the disease and how to prevent it, noting that 15% of Egyptians are in the stage of prediabetes according to current statistics, and 14% of diabetics are unaware of their injury, hence the risk, therefore that the State must intervene to raise awareness and limit the causes of the injury, as it did. Some countries, such as Singapore, have banned advertisements for high calorie foods and urged citizens to exercise and avoid smoking, especially if we know that the percentage of people with prediabetes in Egypt is 3 times more likely to suffer from the disease.
