The Moroccan monarch, King Mohammed VI, informed the outgoing US President Donald Trump to resume official bilateral contacts and diplomatic relations with Israel as soon as possible.
The Moroccan monarch said, in a statement to the royal court, reported by Sky News Arabia, that the United States will open a consulate in Western Sahara under the agreement with Israel.
And he added, “Washington’s recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara is a historic position.”
Trump announced that Morocco and Israel had reached an agreement on the full normalization of diplomatic relations between them.
“Another historic breakthrough today! Israel and the Kingdom of Morocco agreed to establish full diplomatic relations … a colossal breakthrough for peace in the Middle East,” Trump wrote in a tweet Thursday.
In a related context, Trump announced the signing of a declaration that recognizes Morocco’s sovereignty over the Moroccan Sahara.
Trump tweeted on “Twitter” Thursday, “I signed today a declaration recognizing Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara.”
He added that “Morocco’s serious, realistic and serious self-government proposal is the only basis for a just and lasting solution to achieve lasting peace and prosperity.”
He continued in another tweet, “Morocco recognized the United States in 1777, and therefore it is appropriate that we recognize its sovereignty over Western Sahara.”
For its part, the Moroccan Royal Court confirmed that King Mohammed VI made a phone call with Donald Trump and told the latter that he issued a presidential decree, with his firm legal and political power, and with immediate effect, to demand that the United States of America to recognize, for the first time in its history, the sovereignty of the Kingdom. Moroccan squarely in Western Sahara.
On September 15, Israel signed two agreements to normalize relations with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, under the auspices of the United States.
These agreements were severely criticized by the Palestinians. The Palestinian leadership called it a “stab in the back.”
