Shortly after recent US statements about its concern over Turkish actions and the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Cyprus, amid escalating tensions in the eastern Mediterranean, Turkey on Monday expressed its annoyance with Washington’s policy. .
Turkey’s Foreign Ministry said early Monday that the United States should return to a neutral position on Cyprus, after Washington and Nicosia signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a training center.
He also added that “the memorandum of understanding will not contribute to peace and stability in the eastern Mediterranean and will harm the solution of the Cyprus problem.” And she considered that the measures adopted by the United States recently increased tensions in the eastern Mediterranean.
In addition, he said, “We ask the United States to return to the neutral policy that it has traditionally followed on the island of Cyprus and to contribute to the efforts aimed at reaching a solution to the Cyprus problem.”
Deep concern
Notably, the signing of that memorandum came after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced earlier this month that the United States would lift the ban it imposed 33 years ago on supplying weapons to Cyprus and strengthen your security cooperation with Nicosia.
Two days ago, Pompeo, during a visit to Cyprus, expressed his country’s deep concern about Turkey’s actions in the eastern Mediterranean, as it is locked in a confrontation with Greece and Cyprus over marine areas believed to be rich in natural gas.
Turkey had raised major tensions with several European countries, led by Greece, France and Cyprus, as a result of its unilateral moves in the Mediterranean and its gas exploration work.
