French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday, commenting on the crisis of offensive cartoons against the Prophet Muhammad, that France will not change its right to freedom of expression just because it poses a crisis abroad.

Macron expressed regret for the relatively timid international support for France, following the recent attacks in his country, and reiterated that France will not change its right to freedom of expression, just because it creates a shock abroad.

“Hate is excluded from our European values. We can fight, but we will not get into a fight,” Macron added.

In another context, he criticized the UN Security Council and urged European countries to show greater independence, during an interview with the magazine “Grand Content” published in Paris.

Macron said in remarks during the interview: “I must say that the UN Security Council is not currently issuing any useful decision.”

It is noteworthy that France is one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, along with the United States, China, Russia and Great Britain, and each of them can block any decision to use the right of veto. Traditionally, the United States prohibits criticism of the Israeli occupation entity. Russia also avoids sanctions against Syria.

Moving to Europe, Macron emphasized that the old continent needed to become more independent. The French president stressed that the United States will not accept Europeans as allies “unless we take ourselves seriously and have sovereignty in our defense.”

Regarding the recent US elections, Macron described the upcoming change of government in Washington as an opportunity to work on mutual understanding.
